We're off . . . maybe!

New England layouts BadPlane-SM

My sister and I had a rough start to our New England trip last year. For some reason the batteries in my camera were dead even though I had charged them before we left so I never got any photos of the "bad" plane. The one photo is a postcard scan and the other item is one of our baggage stickers. My sister and I always save those. I really wanted to include this story in my book.

Journaling says:
Melinda and I couldn’t wait to go to New England. We have talked about going to Salem and Boston for years and now it was finally happening. We got to the airport about an hour and half before our scheduled departure time. There was a bit of a line for security, but it didn’t take too long. After we got through security we discovered that our flight was actually taking off from the B part of the McNamara Terminal since we were flying to Manchester on a smaller plane. To get to our gate we had to walk through the A portion then through a creepy tunnel of moving sidewalks and weird lights. When we finally arrived at our gate there were several other passengers waiting. We waited patiently until it was time to board. There were no problems boarding the plane. The boarding took less time than expected and we were able to push back from a gate a few minutes early. We then began the endless taxing to the runway. I hate this part at Detroit since it seems to take forever. Finally we reach the runway. We began to accelerate. Melinda and I sat back and tried to relax. Then when we should be lifting up off the ground the pilot slams on the brakes. We both knew that probably wasn’t a good sign. The pilot then came on over the intercom and says that takeoff had to be aborted because he didn’t like the way something was looking. It was hard to hear what he said. This seemed to be an ominous beginning. We sat on the runway for about 10 minutes before getting the OK to return to the gate. More endless taxing! Once we got back to the gate maintenance came on board to talk to the pilots. From where we were seated at the front of the plane it sounded like a warning light had come on, but it was difficult to hear the entire conversation. After a lengthy conversation with the maintenance crew they decided to get everyone off the plane. At that point no one knew if they were going to fix our plane, find us a new plane, or put us on a different flight altogether. We were told to wait patiently at the gate for any updates. After probably another 15 minutes they announced that we would be leaving on a new plane from a different gate. Of course the new gate was all the way at the other end of the terminal. It didn’t take long for everyone to get to the new gate and for them to begin the boarding process again. So we took our seats again. Buckled in and tried to relax. This all seemed so familiar. We pushed back from the gate and taxied out to the runway. Melinda and I had our fingers crossed that this time we would take off. We again began to accelerate, gaining speed and eventually lifting up off the ground! YAY! We were originally scheduled to leave at 9:40 am, but we didn’t take off until 11:45 am. We had a good flight once we got off the ground. When we landed in Manchester we were happy to discover that all of our luggage had made it. Melinda was extremely worried that the luggage was going to get lost when they switched planes, but everything was fine. We had made it to New Hampshire. We still had to drive an hour down to Danvers, MA, but the most stressful part of the day was over. Now our vacation could begin!

A beacon in the night

New England layouts BeaconLight-SM

Cape Neddick Lighthouse in York, ME

Journaling Says:
Cape Neddick Lighthouse, also known as the Nubble Lighthouse, is located in York, ME. There were requests for a lighthouse to be built on Nubble Island as early as 1807, but it wasn’t approved by Congress until 1874 after numerous boating accidents. Congress appropriated $15,000 to build a light station on Nubble Island and in 1879 construction finally began. Cape Neddick Light Station was dedicated by the US Lighthouse service on July 1, 1879. The keeper's house is two stories and includes a family room, dining room, pantry, laundry room and kitchen. A covered walkway connects the keeper's house to the tower. The light is located in a 41-foot tower, 88 feet above the high water mark. The tower is 13 feet in diameter, built of brick, about 18 inches thick, and reinforced by an outer shell of iron sheathing. There are conflicting stories over the original color of the tower, some say red while others say it was brown. It was repainted its current color of white in 1902. In 1911 the walkway that connects the home to the tower was constructed so that during bad weather the keeper could access the tower without going outside. A bell tower was constructed in 1911 and was later replaced by a fog horn in 1961. The horn is activated by the weather and will sound during rainy and foggy periods. On July 13, 1987 the lighthouse became automated and the last Lighthouse Keeper of the Nubble, Russell Ahlgrea, moved out. The house is no longer occupied. The town of York obtained ownership of the lighthouse on December 15, 1997, but the beacon itself is still maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard.

Salem Witch Museum

The Salem Witch museum in Salem is the most visited museum in Salem. It was fun. They don't allow photography inside, so we only have photos of the outside. The picture of my sister and I is actually a blend of two photos. See if you can tell which one is the original and which one is the added one.

In Memory

This is the Salem Village Witchcraft Victim's Memorial in Danvers, MA. Danvers was once known as Salem Village, but has spent the past 300 years distancing themselves from the Witch trial hysteria and it definitely shows because you don't see many traces of it at all. In 1992 they built this memorial for the victims. Its on a small little quiet street in almost the middle of nowhere. It is beautiful. The day we went my sister and I were the only people around. The text around the edge is the words from the victims. It may look like something is misspelled, but there was no standard way to spell words in the 17th century.

Innocent Victims

I wanted to include the names of the victims of the Salem Witch Trial hysteria on my other layout, but it was looking too crowded so I decided to do a seperate layout. The text is what is inscribed on the Salem Witchcraft Victims Memorial in Danvers, MA.
