Each year for the anniversary of the Battle of Antietam I try to do a layout. The photo is of the Sunken Road or Bloody Lane.

At the heart of freedom

Antietam Layouts Ant148Anniversary-SM

I created this layout to commemorate the 148th anniversary of the Battle of Antietam on September 17, 1862. Photos are from the anniversary of the battle in 2009.

Journaling says:
The course of the Civil War was about the change as the Union and Confederate armies amassed their forces near Sharpsburg, MD. Confederate General Robert E. Lee was seeking to win a crucial victory on northern soil while Union General George B. McClellan wanted to drive the Rebels out of Maryland. The battle began at dawn on September 17, 1862, first amongst the rip cornfields near the tiny Dunker Church then spread to the West Woods. Later it would erupt along an old sunken farm lane. As afternoon approach the fighting spread to the steep banks of the Antietam Creek. At the end of the 12 hours of fighting the two sides stubbornly held their ground. The hours after the fighting ceased were spent tending to the wounded and the dead. Both sides fought with courage and bravery. The battle of Antietam would be the bloodiest day in American history. In 12 hours of fighting there were more than 23,000 casualties. The battle of Antietam provided President Abraham Lincoln with the opportunity to issue the Emancipation Proclamation which would free the slaves in the southern states. This also gave a duel purpose to the Union army: to preserve the union and to end slavery. The courage of the Union troops at Antietam would help to bring freedom to all Americans.

I already did an entire book about Antietam, but I wanted to include it in the "Places I've Been" book so I created a sort of condensed version. The journaling is the text from the brochure. All photos were taken in June 2006.
